QRDC RECEIVES THE SBIR TECHNOLOGY OF THE YEAR AWARD AT THE SEVENTH ANNUAL SBIR TECHNOLOGY OF THE YEAR AWARDS HELD IN SEATTLE
Chaska, MN, November 6, 2000
QRDC Inc., announced that QRDC was recently awarded The Technology Of The Year Award at the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Expo in Seattle. QRDC received the best technology award in the category of Industrial/Manufacturing. The national competition was among the nominated companies whose technology was funded through the SBIR program. The two main criteria were the novelty and uniqueness of technologies or products and their importance and possible applications. QRDC is the first Minnesota company to win this award. The SBIR program was established to promote the development of innovative technologies with strong commercial potential by leveraging solutions meeting the needs of government. The award won by QRDC, reflects their industry leadership position in the area of smart skin structures for vibration, noise and shock control. QRDC is currently in the second phase of a contract with the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization (BMDO). The contract is focused on developing a load bearing smart skin prototype, namely Energy Based Smart Skin Structures (EBS3) that has great potential for military and commercial applications. The development of EBS3 will have a profound impact on smart structures for the purpose of vibration, noise, and shock control.
The fully developed products will place QRDC, a high-tech Minnesota based company, among the leaders in smart structures and vibration-related products. In addition to this BMDO funded technology contract, QRDC has demonstrated a strong record in receiving SBIR funds from the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency, the U. S. Army, Navy, Air Force and National Science Foundation.
Applications for our smart skin technology include: passenger and fighter aircraft, space vehicles, unmanned airborne and underwater vehicles, submarines, surface ships, and automobiles. In the case of passenger aircraft, smart skins can be used to eliminate cabin noise, which has been a major concern for the industry. Other applications are smart wallpapers, computer enclosures and clean rooms where even the smallest noise disturbances cannot be tolerated.
