Abstract

Title: Influence of a Multi-Layer Ribbed Plate Insert on the Performance Passive Sonar

Author: Daryoush Allaei (QRDC, Inc.), and David Tarnowski (QRDC, Inc.)

The objective of this project was to demonstrate the applicability of the Vibration Control by Confinement (VCC) approach to palliate the vibratory disturbances of marine structures and subsystems. The VCC technique may have three main parts: localization via design modifications, Concentrated Damping Elements (CDE), and an array of Spatial-Decay-Causing Actuators (SDCA). In this paper, this approach is applied to underwater passive sonar systems. A flat multi-layer insert is designed for the purpose of improving the signal to noise ration of passive sonar. The multi-layer insert is composed of a ribbed flat plate. The signal strength of sonar mounted within a three-layer structure and subjected to an incident wave is evaluated under a variety of conditions. The structure is composed of a steel plate covered with two viscoelastic layers on one side and pressurized air on the other side. The outer viscoelatic layer is in contact with water from which the incident wave is transmitted to the structure. The sonar is placed within the inner viscoelastic layer, which is in contact with the steel plate. The parameters of interest are the material and geometric properties of the insert, three-layer structure, thickness of the two-viscoelastic layers, the angle of incident wave, and the frequency range. The computer model is based on theory of linear elasticity with known boundary conditions and interfaces between the layers. Based on the preliminary results obtained in this study, significant improvement in the sonar performance may be realized by a properly designed insert. This novel VCC technique has the potential to significantly improve the effectiveness and efficiency of vibration control systems by utilizing an optimally distributed sensor/actuator set.
