Older CPU coolers used heat sinks with a relatively small surface area, coupled with a fixed RPM high-speed fan to move air over the small surface area. Newer CPU cooling systems may use copper instead of aluminum for better heat transfer, and elaborate heat sink designs that dissipate more heat into the air.
